”Form Follows Availability”

Form Follows Function is a quite strong manifest since modernism. It has allowed the architects to propose new types of design direction in a convincing way by connecting its design and function. One of the premises of this concept for me is Tabla-Lasa; the white neutral canvas. I strongly respect this manifest and its contribution and I believe this manifest is still valid in some contexts. However, I would like to discuss an alternative manifest by quoting the provocative title of a paper written by Taleen Astrid Josefsson; “Form Follows Availability” since the era has changed. Especially in the matured cities, there are enough buildings, the population is decreasing, and needless to say, climate change is getting harsh. We must start architecture with something already existing, a non-neutral canvas. The manifest is consists of three main components; Circular material flow, Locality and Adaptability. In order to validate this concept, it seems to be a robust approach to introduce alternative ways to observe the existing world by borrowing the power of computation or robotics for example. By discussing the emerging research around this area, I would like to re-think the initial criteria of architectural practice since Tabla-Lasa is not existing anymore…
